How Much Can My Business Borrow? The Revenue Rule of Thumb

By Belmont Capital Partners · October 14, 2026 · 5 min read

Owners usually ask for a round number. Lenders answer with a percentage of revenue. Understanding that percentage tells you, before you apply, roughly what your business can expect.

The rule of thumb

A first revenue-based funding typically lands between 70% and 120% of average monthly deposits. Established businesses with clean statements sit at the top of that range; younger businesses or those with existing payments sit lower. Longer-term products such as term loans, equipment financing and SBA loans can exceed one month of revenue because they are repaid over years.

Average monthly revenueTypical first offerWith longer-term products
$20,000$14,000 – $24,000Up to ~$50,000
$50,000$35,000 – $60,000Up to ~$150,000
$100,000$70,000 – $120,000Up to ~$350,000
$200,000$140,000 – $240,000Up to ~$800,000
$500,000+$350,000 – $600,000Up to $5,000,000

What moves you up the range

  • Two or more years in business
  • Deposits spread across many customers or daily card batches
  • Few or no negative-balance days
  • No other short-term financing in the statements
  • A clear use of funds that increases revenue

What moves you down

  • Six to twelve months in business
  • Existing daily or weekly payments to other funders
  • Frequent NSF returns
  • Revenue trending down over the three months

Renewals raise the ceiling

Most of Belmont's clients fund more than once. After a first advance is repaid on schedule, the second offer is typically larger and cheaper because the repayment history is now part of the file.
