What Lenders Look for in Your Business Bank Statements

By Belmont Capital Partners · October 14, 2026 · 6 min read

Three months of business bank statements are the entire underwriting file for revenue-based funding. Knowing what a specialist looks for lets you anticipate the offer and, in some cases, improve it before you apply.

1. Average monthly deposits

This is the headline number. Total credits over three months divided by three, with owner transfers and loan proceeds removed. Funding offers usually land between 70% and 120% of this figure. The minimum to qualify with Belmont is $20,000.

2. Deposit frequency

Twenty deposits a month from card processors or customers reads as a healthy, active business. One wire on the first of the month reads as a business that depends on a single payer. Both can be funded, but frequency earns better terms.

3. Ending and average daily balance

A business that keeps a cushion relative to its deposits shows it can absorb repayment. Consistently low balances suggest the revenue is already spoken for.

4. Negative days and returned items

NSF returns and overdrafts are the strongest negative signal. A couple across three months is common; a pattern every week will reduce the offer or require explanation.

5. Existing financing payments

Underwriters add up daily or weekly debits to other funders. If existing payments already consume a large share of deposits, a new offer will be smaller or structured as a consolidation.

6. Large unusual transactions

A one-time $100,000 deposit is excluded from the average unless it is explained. Big transfers out to personal accounts are noted but not disqualifying.

7. Trend

Month three stronger than month one is the best signal in the file. A declining trend does not block approval, but a specialist may ask what changed.

Before you apply

  • Download full-month PDF statements from your bank's site, not screenshots
  • Use the business account that receives revenue, not a savings account
  • If a big deposit was a loan or an owner contribution, say so
  • Avoid bouncing a payment in the week before applying
