Seven Uses of Working Capital That Pay for Themselves

Funding costs money. The question is whether the money earns more than it costs. These seven uses consistently do, which is why they make up most of what Belmont's clients fund.

1. Bulk inventory at a discount

A retailer who can buy a season's stock at a 15% volume discount, using capital that costs 10% over the period, keeps the difference and sells at full margin instead of reordering at list price.

2. Bridging a large receivable

A contractor with a $120,000 invoice due in 60 days needs $40,000 for payroll this month. Bridging the gap costs a few thousand dollars; missing payroll costs the crew and the next job.

3. Equipment that adds capacity

A second lift turns away fewer cars. A second truck takes a second lane. If the equipment produces more revenue per month than the financing payment, it pays for itself from day one.

4. Taking a job you could not otherwise bid

Larger projects require materials and labor up front. Working capital lets a contractor bid the $300,000 job instead of the $60,000 one, and the margin on the larger job dwarfs the cost of capital.

5. Advertising that already converts

If every $1,000 of ad spend returns $3,000 in sales, the constraint is cash, not strategy. Funding the ad budget scales a machine that already works.

6. Hiring ahead of demand

Service businesses lose revenue when they cannot take the call. Hiring and training a technician in April, before the summer rush, pays back in August.

7. Consolidating expensive short-term payments

Replacing several daily payments with one structured product can lower the total weekly outflow and restore cash flow. A specialist can model this from your statements.

The test

Before funding anything, write down what the money produces and when. If the answer is a number and a date, it is probably a good use. If the answer is 'it will help', wait.
